Around eight months ago, I received an email from Sharon Arnold at the American Cancer Society explaining that, without the community stepping up, there would no longer be a World Golf Village Relay for Life supporting cancer research for the American Cancer Society. I forwarded that email out to Davidson Realty’s agents and to my surprise, Realtors Amy Anderson and Debra Pappas took the entire project on themselves. With the blood, sweat and tears of the amazing committee members, World Golf Village’s Relay for Life on Saturday, March 29, raised $7,000 in one day. A total of $29,135.90 was raised for the entire event.

If you are not familiar with Relay for Life, it began in the mid-1980s when Dr. Gordy Klatt from Tacoma wanted to increase the income of his local American Cancer Society office and support his patients who had battled cancer. In 1985, Dr. Klatt put his passions for running marathons and fundraising together and spent 24 straight hours running around a track while friends, family and patients watched.  Throughout the evening friends donated $25 to run or walk with Dr. Klatt for 30 minutes, raising $27,000 to fight cancer, and one man’s vision turned into a nation wide event.

184970_104121923003829_100002180658152_43025_4711363_nI love beer…most any kind of beer, so you can imagine I was extremely excited to hear that we now have a brewery right around the corner from our St. Augustine golf course community. Mile Marker Brewing is located right off SR 16 near the outlet malls. What that means to me is no more driving to Jacksonville Beach for delicious microbrews. Now, the delicious microbrews have come to me!

Mile Marker currently has five beers on tap – Mile Marker Zero (Key West Kölsch-style Ale), Mile Marker 1565 (Red Ale), Mile Marker 82 (Islamorada IPA), Ben’s Too Peachy (Kölsch-style Ale with peach), and a honey ale (Kölsch-style Ale with honey). They have a Pecan Brown Ale and an Oatmeal Stout brewing which will be ready to serve in the next couple of weeks.
