That’s what’s in store for the first Davidson Cares fundraiser at Mile Marker Brewery on Friday, November 9th! Mile Marker is located at 3420 Agricultural Center Drive near the outlet mall in St. Augustine. Proceeds from the fundraiser go to the new Davidson Cares foundation, which offers support for our outstanding St. Johns County public schools, including Mill Creek Elementary, Wards Creek Elementary, Palencia Elementary and Pacetti Bay Middle School. The program launched this month and is currently collecting grant submissions from each of the four local schools for their chance to win $500 to $1,000 for a great idea benefiting a classroom, a grade level, or even the entire school

Craig Speziale, Principal of Ponte Vedra High School and a seasoned academic administrator, will discuss getting students ready for high school and post-high school, including changing academic requirements that may impact current middle school and high school students. Says Speziale, “Successfully managing the transition from middle school to high school and from high school to college or other post high school opportunities can be a great advantage for students. With recent changes in academic requirements in the state of Florida, we want to help parents understand the changes and be aware of the resources available and what the St. Johns County School District is doing to help prepare students.”

The Village Church at World Golf Village is an Inter-denominational Christian Church focused on “Giving our Neighborhoods a Great Place to Worship!” From humble beginnings in the early 2000s, The Village Church has become a spiritual hub of activity, offering engaging youth programs, adult bible study, community service projects, Weight Watchers meetings and a variety of other activities for all ages. A group of friends and I met up last Thursday at the Renaissance Resort to enjoy excellent food, wine, spirits and the very talented Sinatra-esque singer, Wade Tower. Renaissance Hotels around the world participated in the “2012 Global Day of Discovery” on June 7th to encourage people to “Get out and Discover” something wonderful on June 7th, but as Assistant General Manager of the Renaissance of World Golf Village Paul Daum put it, “We got the best entertainment!”
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer throughout the United States. Over the past 31 years, more people have had skin cancer than any other form of cancers combined. It is said that one in five Americans will develop some form of skin cancer during their lifetime.
There is some good news. Skin cancer can be prevented with the proper steps and caution. On Thursday, May 31 at 7:00 pm Dr. Robert Brown of North Florida Dermatology Associates will be presenting a free seminar on Skin Care and Skin Prevention. Hosted by the Davidson Realty as part of their Davidson Speaker Series, Dr. Brown will discuss the importance of sun protection, regular skin check-ups and how to navigate the sea of SPF (Sun Protection Factor) ratings. Dr. Brown will also discuss how important it is for children to be aware of skin cancer at an early age. “Rates of skin cancer in children, teens and young adults are growing at an alarming rate,” Dr. Brown cautioned. Throughout the seminar, Dr. Brown will be answering questions, providing insights, and giving advice for minimizing skin aging and maximizing skin health.
When Dan Jenkins was running on passion and raw talent, he befriended his fellow Texan, the great Ben Hogan. Ben became his mentor and gave him lessons on the game of golf. At the crossroads of Dan’s golf ability – Ben wanted him to achieve more and tried to coax him to commit to the game. Dan, a bit frustrated with his swing, told Ben, “I just want to be a sportswriter – I’ve always wanted to be a sportswriter”.
As Dan tells it – Ben paused and riveted him with an amour-piercing look – held eye-to-eye for an uncomfortably long time – then simply said, “Keep working at it”.
The rest is history because Dan Jenkins went on to become the greatest and most revered sportswriter in America – always working at his craft.
The second annual Women’s Mixer is back by popular demand! If you are not familiar with Relay for Life, it began in the mid-1980s when Dr. Gordy Klatt from Tacoma wanted to increase the income of his local American Cancer Society office and support his patients who had battled cancer. In 1985, Dr. Klatt put his passions for running marathons and fundraising together and spent 24 straight hours running around a track while friends, family and patients watched. Throughout the evening friends donated $25 to run or walk with Dr. Klatt for 30 minutes, raising $27,000 to fight cancer, and one man’s vision turned into a nation wide event.
It’s that time of year again! Dust off those crazy golf pants, avoid the gopher at all cost, and make it out to the 12th annual Murray Bros. Caddyshack Charity Golf Tournament. Hosted by the famous Murray family, this all-inclusive two day charity event is packed full with great golf, celebrity guests, live music, and all kinds of other antics. Everything is included except the hotel and transportation to this once-a-year, can’t miss charity event. Starting in 2001, this special event has raised over $1.5 million for healthcare and education throughout the first coast. This year, part of the proceeds will be donated to The Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundationto help further provide equipment and training to fire departments, law enforcement, and EMS around Northeast Florida.
