CNN is another in a long line of media outlets to name St. Augustine one of the best places to retire. In October, CNNMoney listed St. Augustine as one of “25 Best Places to Retire” in a list that also included Winston-Salem, NC, Austin, TX, Tucson, AZ, and Louisville, KY. St. Augustine was the only Florida city to make the cut.
The article highlighted “St. Augustine’s fantastic weather, beautiful beaches, and world-class golf” as well as its “active year-round community,” housing options and Flagler Hospital. In recent years, SmartMoney listed St. Augustine as one of nine “Best New Places to Retire,” Wall Street Journal’s MarketWatch listed St. Augustine as one of the “10 Best Places to Retire in the U.S,” and Bloomberg Businessweek listed St. Augustine as one of “America’s Best Affordable Places to Retire.”

Conceptually, the St. Johns’ Harbour project, as approved had, few attributes. Fortunately, the project did have significant exposure to I-95 and the granted approvals preceded the implementation of the 1985 Growth Management Act/Concurrency in St. Johns County, which implied the project would be vested from this yet to be implemented law. Finding a way to capitalize on these two project “attributes” was going to be the key to meeting the investor’s goals and objectives.

In May, 1986 final development approvals were received for a 6,300 acre mixed use project located off Interstate 95 in St. Johns County approximately 23 miles south of Jacksonville, Florida. The project encompassed 6,300 acres within six parcels and was granted development approvals for 13,835 residential units and over 6.5 million square feet of commercial, industrial and office use. The project was named St. Johns Harbour.

The foundation will be funded by proceeds from real estate sales along with great local fundraising events, like their first event at Mile Marker Brewery on Friday, November 9th! Pacetti Bay Middle School Principal Sue Sparkman announced last week the school was awarded the renowned International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program designation following a stringent and lengthy evaluation process. Pacetti Bay is the only middle school in northern St. Johns County to have received the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program honor. The process for Pacetti Bay to become an IB school began soon after the school opened in 2005. The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment. These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

It’s back to school season and our World Golf Village and north St. Johns County area families will find some changes as they head back to school on August 20th including the addition of the new Palencia Elementary School and a new Principal at Mill Creek Elementary School. The opening of Palencia Elementary School this month brings with it rezoning that impacts some families previously zoned for Mill Creek Elementary. The St. Johns County School District website provides an easy to use address look-up to find out which schools your elementary, middle and high school student is zoned for.
