Whether through work, community service, or just being a great neighbor, each of World Golf Village’s treasured residents give back to their community in their own ways. Royal Pines resident Fred Odom is extraordinary because his efforts have benefited the area in each of these ways.
He serves on the Boards of Royal Pines Homeowners Association and Gateway Community Center in Jacksonville, in addition to dedicating time to several professional associations. We recently caught up with Fred to get to know a little more about him and his background.
Q: From where do you hail and what brought you to St. Augustine?I am originally from Waycross, Georgia, but I have travelled around the world 65 times, so you say I am resident of the world. I came to St. Augustine because of World Golf Village.
Tropical Smoothie is now open in The Shoppes at Murabella! It came at the perfect time when the beach and an ice-cold smoothie are calling your name. I think I can speak for most of my World Golf Village neighbors when I say how excited I am to have a healthy and delicious restaurant right outside the King & Bear gate.
“Eat Better. Feel Better.” Tropical Smoothie offers fresh food including breakfast, salads, wraps, sandwiches and flatbreads along with real fruit smoothies. My personal favorite is the Peaches N’ Silk with fresh peaches, strawberries and bananas, but you have your pick from low fat smoothies, supercharged smoothies or simply indulgent smoothies. Don’t forget to add in supplements for that extra boost! They offer everything from energizer supplements to stress defense supplements.
One of my favorite things about living in St. Augustine is the multitude of fishing opportunities in our area. Because we have vast bodies of water surrounding us including the St. Johns River, the Intracoastal Waterway, and the Atlantic Ocean, there are a variety of opportunities for both freshwater and saltwater fishing. We are also very lucky to have local fishing stores that are more than happy to help with tackle and local knowledge. Not to mention, local forums offering information and insight on both fishing locations and equipment.
After the name and concept had been determined, all that was left to do was find a hotelier, a timeshare developer, a retail developer, a golf course developer and a group of builders who would buy into the World Golf Hall of Fame concept and of course convince St. Johns County to support a convention center at the hotel! It was imperative that all partners be willing to trust each other enough to construct their respective facilities simultaneously for a project Grand Opening. One thing was for sure, this was not a project for corporate America or any of the pension fund investors.
For our third blog on Legacy Builders, we took advantage of the beautiful North Florida weather and joined President of Legacy Builders of North Florida John Unkefer at one of his homes under construction in World Golf Village’s King & Bear community. In this video, John tells us all about their new construction projects in and around Jacksonville and we explore the inside of the beautiful Legacy Builders home in the King & Bear to better understand the construction process. Once Deane Beman made the decision to locate the PGA TOUR Hall of Fame at the Saint Johns project, the specific details of the project components needed to be formalized. The original PGA TOUR Hall of Fame project concept was relatively small in terms of required development acreage with only one 18-hole golf course, a 350 resort room hotel and the 28,000 sq.ft. PGA TOUR Hall of Fame. The permitted Hall of Fame development area in the Saint Johns project was 82.0 acres, substantially more acreage than was required for the PGA Hall of Fame and a 350 room resort hotel. In addition, while the project concept had been decided upon, the source and amount of funding required for initial construction and future operations had not been identified.

Davidson Realty President Sherry Davidson and I were excited to get a personal tour of Palencia Elementary School (PES) from Principal Don Campbell. Don has been in education for more than 40 years and specializes in opening new schools, such as Wards Creek Elementary in World Golf Village, and now Palencia Elementary, which opened in August of 2012. Palencia Elementary is one of our most leading edge St. Johns County Schools and caters to 738 students. Come along with us for a tour!
Davidson Realty launched their non-profit foundation, Davidson Cares, in November of 2013 to offer support for local schools in the World Golf Village area, including Mill Creek Elementary, Wards Creek Elementary, Palencia Elementary and Pacetti Bay Middle School. Davidson Cares has given a total of $11,300 to the four schools mentioned above in less than six months!
