So many of us consider our dogs to be part of the family. In fact, almost 40% of U.S. households own at least one dog (American Veterinary Medical Association, 2012) and we are more and more likely to include our pooch in family vacations, events, and even our weddings. So, it is only fitting that our community has created ways to include our furry friends in everyday activities.

Thanks to sites like BringFido.com, an online dog travel directory, it is easier than ever to find hotels, restaurants, and attractions that are pet friendly. Thanks to St. Augustine’s fantastic weather and reputation as a tourist destination, businesses have opened their doors to the millions of Americans who travel with their dogs. Here are just some of those local businesses.

Ready to begin your next house hunting adventure? Great! Before you hit the pavement, Troy Silhan of Bank of England has some sage advice: Be certain you understand your pre-approval!  It is vital that home buyers recognize what a pre-approval is – and isn’t – as well as the differences between the various pre-approval processes and documents.

We recently caught up with Troy to discuss pre-approvals and clear up some lingering misconceptions about this important step in the purchasing process.

As many of my fishing buddies and World Golf Village neighbors know, our area offers a wide variety of ramps to get your boat in the water. I have a 22-foot Nautic Star Bay Boat with a Yamaha 150-4 stroke outboard that enables me to fish a variety of locations within the Intracoastal and bottom fish in the ocean. I love spending the day on the water with some friends and grabbing lunch or dinner at some of the best eateries in town.

For the Love of Fishing

Posted by: Sam Davidson in Local Activities, Nature, Tips

One of my favorite things about living in St. Augustine is the multitude of fishing opportunities in our area. Because we have vast bodies of water surrounding us including the St. Johns River, the Intracoastal Waterway, and the Atlantic Ocean, there are a variety of opportunities for both freshwater and saltwater fishing. We are also very lucky to have local fishing stores that are more than happy to help with tackle and local knowledge. Not to mention, local forums offering information and insight on both fishing locations and equipment.

When fire or smoke unexpectedly damages your home, the first steps you take could mean the difference between a small cleanup and a more costly and time consuming restoration.  Knowing when to call in a professional can save you time in getting your life back to normal and money by preventing further damage.

What to do BEFORE disaster strikes:

  • Read your homeowner’s policy and review it annually to be sure you are adequately covered.
  • Keep important documents, policies and documentation (pictures or videos) of the contents of your home, outside your home in a safety deposit box.  Keep a second key with a friend or neighbor in the event your key is destroyed.
  • Keep copies of the contents of your wallets in your lock box.
  • Keep a spare or duplicate credit card in your lockbox.

What NOT to do if you have had fire damage:

  • Do not touch anything with your bare hands.  Oil from your hands can permeate upholstery, walls and woodwork, causing additional damage.
  • Do not wash walls.  Incorrect cleaning could compound the soot residue.
  • Do not attempt to clean carpets or upholstered furniture.
  • Do not use electrical appliances until having them checked.
  • Do not use ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet.

CottagecareWhen my husband and I were house hunting for a home in Jacksonville some years back, we started to notice a trend.  The cleanest houses always made it to the top of our list!  Shortly after when we decided to rent out our home in Louisiana and become landlords for the first time, the tenant we chose won us over when she proudly announced, “I’m a clean freak!”. We knew that she would help protect the value of our biggest investment – our home.  Recently when I asked several Davidson Realty Agents, each and every one of them confirmed what I suspected all along: Clean homes show better, sell faster and command higher prices.

Woman GardeningThe cooler days of fall are just around the corner. Fall brings a new growing season and revitalized interest in getting back into the garden. It is time to plan the garden projects you would like to accomplish during fall and winter. imagesCAI0SE3VConsidering that 1/3 of Americans take some kind of supplement, it is pretty scary to learn that the supplement industry in our country is not regulated…AT ALL.  With no safety measures in place, the old saying “It may not help me but at least it won’t hurt me” really goes flying out the window.  This means that it is really important to understand thoroughly what you are putting into your body.

docSkin cancer is the most common form of cancer throughout the United States. Over the past 31 years, more people have had skin cancer than any other form of cancers combined. It is said that one in five Americans will develop some form of skin cancer during their lifetime.

There is some good news. Skin cancer can be prevented with the proper steps and caution. On Thursday, May 31 at 7:00 pm Dr. Robert Brown of North Florida Dermatology Associates will be presenting a free seminar on Skin Care and Skin Prevention. Hosted by the Davidson Realty as part of their Davidson Speaker Series, Dr. Brown will discuss the importance of sun protection, regular skin check-ups and how to navigate the sea of SPF (Sun Protection Factor) ratings.  Dr. Brown will also discuss how important it is for children to be aware of skin cancer at an early age. “Rates of skin cancer in children, teens and young adults are growing at an alarming rate,” Dr. Brown cautioned.  Throughout the seminar, Dr. Brown will be answering questions, providing insights, and giving advice for minimizing skin aging and maximizing skin health.
