wade tower event 2A group of friends and I met up last Thursday at the Renaissance Resort to enjoy  excellent food, wine, spirits and the very talented Sinatra-esque singer, Wade Tower. Renaissance Hotels around the world participated in the “2012 Global Day of Discovery” on June 7th to encourage people to “Get out and Discover” something wonderful on June 7th, but as Assistant General Manager of the Renaissance of World Golf Village Paul Daum put it, “We got the best entertainment!”

Since our last visit to Mile Marker Brewery, the brew masters have added some great new unique beers on tap, entertainment, and BBQ for everyone to enjoy. As one of the fastest growing breweries in America’s oldest city, Mile Marker truly has exceeded all expectations in craft brewing and excellent service.

Let’s begin with the most important thing about Mile Marker…the beer! Since our last video, the brew masters have been working extremely hard to create one-of-a-kind beers that are like none other out there. The one I was most excited about was the double brewed IPA, known as the 215 Imperial IPA. If you are an IPA person like yours truly, you will enjoy this. The 215 is in reference to the Kennedy Space Center’s exit and the rebel spacecraft on the tap is there because they used both Millennium and Falconer Flight Hops. Another stand out was the Ginger Ale. A very smooth beer with hints of ginger amongst it, this is a great dinner beer, especially if you have a nice sushi roll to go along with it. The other two that are new since our last video are the Pecan Brown Ale and the Coconut Porter. Both are very flavorful, smooth and if you like a darker beer they are right up your alley.

docSkin cancer is the most common form of cancer throughout the United States. Over the past 31 years, more people have had skin cancer than any other form of cancers combined. It is said that one in five Americans will develop some form of skin cancer during their lifetime.

There is some good news. Skin cancer can be prevented with the proper steps and caution. On Thursday, May 31 at 7:00 pm Dr. Robert Brown of North Florida Dermatology Associates will be presenting a free seminar on Skin Care and Skin Prevention. Hosted by the Davidson Realty as part of their Davidson Speaker Series, Dr. Brown will discuss the importance of sun protection, regular skin check-ups and how to navigate the sea of SPF (Sun Protection Factor) ratings.  Dr. Brown will also discuss how important it is for children to be aware of skin cancer at an early age. “Rates of skin cancer in children, teens and young adults are growing at an alarming rate,” Dr. Brown cautioned.  Throughout the seminar, Dr. Brown will be answering questions, providing insights, and giving advice for minimizing skin aging and maximizing skin health.

Eat-Stop-Eat-healthy-eatingSummer is a family time full of travel and adventure.  However, it can also mean at time of too much “vacation eating”.  Of course that sounds great in the short run, but in the long run it can lead to summer colds and weight gain. So how can we keep our families feeling tip top this summer?

Well, to start with it is important to recognize that eating healthy keeps us feeling good and helps us to maintain a healthy weight.  Healthy eating includes eliminating as much junk food, fast food and processed food as possible since these foods weaken our immune system.  Additionally, if we look at the foundation of healthy eating we find fruits and veggies which actually improve our immune function. Unfortunately these are often the hardest to get into our families diets on a consistent basis.  If this is your challenge….never fear!  Below there are ten tips for getting your family to eat more of these immune boosters every day!

epic landscapeMulch is a wonderful addition to any landscape.  A mulch layer around trees and shrubs provides many benefits.

♦ Helps maintain soil moisture.   Mulch slows evaporation and reduces the amount of water that is needed by the plants.
♦ Inhibits weeds.  It is almost impossible to keep weeds out of bedding areas without some type of mulch covering.
♦ Helps maintain soil temperature.  Mulch keeps the plants’ roots warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.
♦ Adds Beauty.  Mulch gives planting beds a neat and uniform appearance.  Its color and textures compliments the plants and the house.
♦ Reduces soil erosion.  Water running off the house or from adjacent areas can create a lot of soil erosion.  Mulch will decrease the amount of soil lost.
♦ Improves the soil.  Any organic mulch will decompose over time.  This will increase the soil’s fertility and improve the soil’s texture and drainage.
♦ Provides protection.  Having a layer of mulch around plants and trees will protect them from lawnmowers and string trimmers.

Entrance Tower & Monument at K&BJust as the cardinals are busy preparing their nests in our wooded St. Augustine, Florida community, so too are new World Golf Village residents readying their own cozy nests! The new construction that began to increase at the start of this year, continues on an upward trend in our master planned golf community. New homebuilding construction is happening throughout the World Golf Village neighborhoods with a range of projects underway by national homebuilders and local custom homebuilders.

National homebuilder Standard Pacific Homes has broken ground on 4 homes in the family-oriented GroveWood neighborhood of World Golf Village.  The anticipated completion is summer 2012.  Standard Pacific Homes purchased 16 lots in GroveWood late last year. The company is offering four floor plans, ranging from about 2,500 to 3,500 square feet.  Pricing starts in the high $200,000’s and an extensive list of upgrades comes standard with the new homes.

When Mrs. Jarrell, the new Principal at A-rated Wards Creek Elementary School in World Golf Village, agreed to create a video tour of the school, it was no surprise she wanted the spotlight to be on the award-winning St. Augustine school and not on herself. The more time we spent with Mrs. Jarrell, the more we came to see why she was the perfect person to continue Don Campbell’s legacy.  She invited us on a private tour of the school, while the children were off having fun for Spring Break!

Wards Creek Elementary School is a top performing school in St. Johns County, which is the top performing school district in the state of Florida. Mrs. Jarrell explains their success is built on strong academics and strong character. The pre-kindergarten through 5th grade elementary school has embraced Stephen Covey’s “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” becoming a Franklin Covey “Leader in Me” School and helping students develop essential life skills and character. Wards Creek Elementary School is working towards Lighthouse Status – there are only 24 Lighthouse Schools in the nation.
